I splurged on some art supplies the other day when a beautiful set of Faber-Castell Polychromos went on sale at https://www.jerrysartarama.com/faber-castell-polychromos-pencil-sets. So I bought a big set of pencils and also a small set of Pan Pastels because I have been wanting to use them as an underpainting.

The pan pastels are amazing for underpainting Polychromos pencils. You see, the one thing I have always disliked about pastels was their chalky feeling on my fingers, but these come with sponges to spread. The brand name of these sponges is Sofft Covers. I did find them difficult to spread in larger areas where I wanted it to be black, but it could be the Canson pastel paper that made this difficult being the paper is rough.
Since the background didn’t look at all how I wanted, I altered the background in Photoshop to redo my Bokeh effects. Bokeh /ˈbōkā/ (sounds like bow-kay) is the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of an image. Many times it is illustrated by the way light appears in the background like little fuzzy circles. I wanted them to be a slight blue color to contrast with all the orangy colors of the lion but they looked better in a darker tone.
This is the first time using the Polychromos pencils, they are made of vegetable oil, wax, and pigment. For the most part, they layered over the pastels quite well. I want to try them without the underpainting and some lighter paper to truly see how well they blend.
